Exploding stars: Novae, Supernovae and in Between

نویسنده

  • Angelo Cassatella
چکیده

Novae and supernovae are among the most violent explosive events known in nature. They can arise in two ways: from single star evolution, as Type II supernovae; or from binary star evolution, as novae and Type Ia Supernovae. The possible evolutionary link between the two latter classes will be addressed, together with some major results from multiwavelength observations of SN 1987A and of recent novae. New Stars and telescopes: Nova research in the last four centuries

This article gives a brief overview of 400 years of research in the field of novae and related stars. Important objects, first applications of various observing techniques, and early ideas of the interpretation of phenomena are listed. Also, the historical evolution of the classification of novae and related stars (supernovae, dwarf novae), as well as their use as distance indicators is discussed.

A Survey for Fast Transients in the Fornax Cluster of Galaxies

The luminosity gap between novae (MR ≤ −10) and supernovae (MR ≥ −17) is well known since the pioneering research of Zwicky and Hubble. Nearby galaxy clusters and concentrations offer an excellent opportunity to search for explosions brighter than classical novae and fainter than supernovae. Here, we present the results of a B-band survey of 23 member galaxies of the Fornax cluster, performed a...

The Effects of Changes in Reaction Rates on Simulations of Nova Explosions

Classical novae participate in the cycle of Galactic chemical evolution in which grains and metal enriched gas in their ejecta, supplementing those of supernovae, AGB stars, and WolfRayet stars, are a source of heavy elements for the ISM. Once in the diffuse gas, this material is mixed with the existing gases and then incorporated into young stars and planetary systems during star formation. In...

Evolution of Lithium in the Milky Way

We adopt up-to-date Li yields from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in order to study the temporal evolution of this element in the solar neighbourhood. Several lithium stellar sources are considered besides the AGBs: Type II supernovae (SNe), novae, low-mass giants. Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) nucleosynthesis is taken into account as well. We conclude that AGB stars do not substantially contr...

Observability of Scattered-Light Echoes Around Variable Stars and Cataclysmic Events

Scattered light echoes from variable and cataclysmic stars offer one of the most effective means to probe the structure and composition of circumtellar and interstellar media. I build a simple model of light-echo surface brightness by considering the source spectrum, and the dust density, geometry, and scattering efficiency. I use this model to investigate whether echoes should be observable ar...
